Prize draws in the UK are covered by legislation contained in section 14 of the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1974. Essentially a "substantial degree" of skill must be required to successfully win a prize otherwise the Free Prize Draw may instead be deemed an illegal lottery. Best practice guidelines for the promotion of Prize Draws The Direct Marketing Association produces a set of Best Practice Guidelines for promotors to adhere to. While aimed directly at those who run Prize Draws and Competitions, the guidelines also make very interesting reading for participants and make useful ammunition if you feel a particular Prize Draw isn't playing by the rules. [View Best practice guidelines] The Government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport produces a useful fact sheet on prize draws in the UK. "Prize competitions are competitions in which success depends to a substantial degree on the exercise of skill. Such competitions usually involve the answering of questions, solving of puzzles, tie-breakers etc." [View Fact Sheet on Prize Draws] The law on prize competitions is contained in section 14 of the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976. Unfortunately, Her Majesty's Stationery Office only hold electronic records of Acts as far back as 1988 and so this specific Act is not available, however amendments and associated legislation are available online.
